Nipper on Movies

Hello world!

So what’s this blog about?  Bascially, it’s just a way for me to talk about movies and the movie biz.  Sometimes I’ll talk about TV, but since 95% of series these days revolve around murder investigation, I’ll stick to movies mostly.  I used to talk about all this stuff with my brother – but he moved to Kenya so I needed another outlet.

I’ll probably also post a lot of movie trailer reviews.  I have a bit o’ expertise in this area, having watched around 5,000 previews (conservatively estimated) over the past three years via this cool weekend job wherein I get paid by one of the studios to watch trailers attached to new releases in order to gauge the audience’s reaction to them.

So who might enjoy reading this movie blog?  It depends on what kind of movie fan you are.  See, there are three basic types of mega movie fans (“mega” referring to how avid a fan you are – not whether or not you’re a fan of mega movies, i.e. studio tent poles… and by the way, I’m not a tent pole basher):

First, you have the “Comic-conners” – those likely to frequent that big San Diego Comics fest and avidly read AICN for all their film news.  Comic-conners salivate over future releases like Iron Man, usually like horror movies, and are good at unearthing official movie titles like Cloverfield before even J.J. Abrams knows about it.  Their bedrooms are likely littered with obscure comic books – excuse me, graphic novels – and there may be a Boba-Fett standee in the corner.  This group also thinks Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez (I prefer to call him Bob-Rod for short) hung the moon – even though they didn’t.

The second category of mega fan is a group I call “Rushmores”.  This group is likely to buy their tickets online in advance for all Wes and/or P.T. Anderson flicks.  It’s an artier film crowd – those of the horn-rimmed glasses and black turtle-neck variety.  They’re the ones huddled in the corner on the first day of film school discussing the finer points of Fellini and the genius of Fight Club.  When you diplomatically drop by said corner and happen to mention you saw Armageddon three times in the theatre (on purpose), this group looks down their noses at you like you’re related to Jerry Bruckheimer and quickly gets back to discussing reasons Sergei Eisenstein rocks.

Perhaps needless to say at this point, I’m not in either of those groups.  I think I belong to a third category of fan that I haven’t named yet.  This group probably likes movies as much as the above groups, but they take them a tad less serious, i.e. the fact they call motion pictures “movies” as opposed to “films”.  Our Netflix queue is probably more diverse than the other groups’ by virtue of there being the occasional rom-com (then again, that might just be a reflection of marital status).  My group rarely gets its art film on, and when we do, it’s for something like Letters from Iwo Jima.  We’re likely to be overheard complaining about 75% of movies now being comic book movies (FYI:  that’s a made up percentage reflecting the extent to which I think there are too many comic book movies).  We’re also the only group that has a faction of folks who thinks Michael Bay is one of our national movie treasures.  Uh oh, I may’ve just scared away any potential readership.

So there you have it, a brief overview of where I’m coming from.  If you’re not in the third group of movie fans, I still hope you’ll stop by for some enlightenment… meaning, lighten up – it’s just a movie!  Just kidding.  Studio suits might also want to check out this blog for information about which movies will tank.  Just semi-kidding, suits… keep up the good work… more comic book movies, please.

Glad to see this! Looking forward to seeing more.

In fact, it would be cool to have movie posters with each review for some visual aid. Also it would be nifty to link to the actual trailers that you review, though I don’t know how well Apple’s trailer website ( http://www.apple.com/trailers/ ) keeps up with what’s actually being shown in the theaters.

    Keep it coming!

So what if you like Wes Anderson, some comic book movies, and Michael Bay, and sometimes alternate between calling movies “movies” and “films” in writing, just to keep from saying the same words over and over, but always call them “movies” in speaking?

I love that you’ve got these categories all figured out. You’re so right.

And welcome to blogging! It’s high time!

I’d love to implement your suggestions, Chris. Since I barely know how to post text at the moment, you’ll probably have to give me some tips. ( :

Katy, you’ve raised a good point. We may have to invent a new category of movie fan. Maybe I’ll name this group the “Katies”.

And I was over-generalizing a bit. I’ve been guilty of liking the occasional comic book movie and I admit to wanting to check out some more of Wes Anderson’s work.
